Burger Joints

TessarosLast week I had a quick in and out trip to Pittsburgh and during my visit I was invited to lunch at Tessaro’s in Pittsburgh’s Little Italy section of Bloomfield. Tessaro’s is exactly the type of joint I like to patron; inside the old red-bricked building lies a place that just oozes old school Pittsburgh at its finest. When I walked in, I immediately noticed a mixed crowd of hungry businessmen and firefighters sitting at the counter. Upon entry the sweet aroma of Tessaro’s grill hit my nostrils and I knew that this was wise dining selection for a quick visit to the ‘Burgh. The ambiance is great too – classic checker flooring, wooden booths, and denim table cloths. Clearly a timeless classic restaurant stemming from an era before the chain restaurants took over. One note – please excuse the quality of the photos… I didn’t have my camera with me the day I dined at Tessaro’s.

My dining companion told me that this is one of the best burgers in Pittsburgh. I thought to myself that he made a pretty bold statement but I was up for giving it the Pepsi challenge. As I looked over the menu, my suspicion was confirmed that I would not find any small plates of bruschetta or rabbit food in this place. It’s all typical pub selections on the menu, and they also include some Ribs and Kabob entrees as well. All the burgers are 1/2 pounders, and include a choice of sides – potato salad, cole slaw, home fries, white rice steamed broccoli/cauliflower, boiled red skin potatoes or chips. While I was eager to order, I couldn’t decide if I wanted the Bacon Bleu Cheeseburger or the Gourmet Burger – I decided on the latter: Gourmet Burger, medium, red skin potatoes. ($9.25)

tessaros gourmet burgerThe food arrived about 20 minutes later – the sweet smokey aroma of the burger, the bacon, and the grilled onions hit my olfactory senses like a crashing wave. My mouth began to water. Then like a blitzkrieg I dove into the burger faster than Lindsay Lohan going into the slammer. It was truly sublime. The burger itself seemed bigger than a 1/2 pounder – It was cooked exactly the way I ordered it and maintained its natural juices inside the meat, thus the bottom section of the bun was not a soggy mess. The meat was juicy, lightly seasoned, and the ratio of lean beef to fat was balanced very well. Now, the beef is the star of the show but I would like to give props to the bun. I don’t know where it came from, but it was delicious and the texture was nice and spongy. I suspect Tessaro’s uses a fresh baked bun judging by it’s unique shape and size.

Red skin potatoes fared well – they provide fresh melted butter with them, which is a nice touch. So in the end the verdict on Tessaro’s a positive one. I would classify this place as a burger destination joint if one were visiting Pittsburgh. One piece of advice – come hungry. Tessaro’s burgers are one of the finest burgers I have had anywhere. Period Final.

Smashburger Takes on Tempe, AZ

smashburger drinkAs I walk down University Avenue along the ASU campus I see the usual suspects; coffee houses, bookstores, and oodles of fast food joints. Today there is a new kid in town. Smashburger.

A fresh take on the classic fast food burger joint, Smashburger offers made-to-order burgers; Rosemary, olive oil, garlic fries (Smashfries); and Haagen-Dazs shakes. Every Smashburger is made when it’s ordered, so don’t come here if you are late to class; the wait from order to delivery is about five to seven minutes, and you’ll want to take your time enjoying these burgers. Smashburger takes a different approach to burger preparation – they start with a one-third or half pound ball of 100% fresh Angus beef; smash, sear, and season it on a flat grill, then serve it on a buttered-toasted artisan bun and top it with cheese, fresh produce and condiments. The result is an irregularly shaped, juicy, delicious burger.

I stopped down there today for the grand opening and tried the BBQ, Bacon, & Cheese Smashburger ($5.99) with Smashfries ($1.79), and Veggie Frites ($2.99). Right away I noticed that the Smashburger differentiates itself from other burgers with ambrosial seasonings and juiciness. Yes, this burger was juicier than Perez Hilton gossip at a Hollywood red carpet event. These guys really have the searing down to a science. A few other points of interest – the Smashfries are delicious; the whole rosemary, garlic, oil coating really works well. Points for the Veggie Frites, too. You get a nice blend of asparagus, carrots, and green beans, which are flash fried and seasoned, then served hot to your table. They offer a few other menu items including a Smashchicken sandwiches, Smashdogs, and Smashsalads (if you’re into that healthy stuff).

If Smashburger has a weakness, it’s the hours of operation. I mean, come on.. you are operating on a college campus and closing at 10 PM every night? Seriously? One thing ASU needs are more places to soak up all that alcohol after a long night on the sauce. I’ll give Smashburger a half point back for opening at 10 AM to help cure the hangover the next day. I have a feeling that a smashed, seared burger and greasy coated fries may remedy the brown bottle flu.

Overall, Smashburger is a hit and is sure to win the hearts and minds of hungry college students roaming the streets of Tempe, Arizona.

Delux Burger – Phoenix, AZ

Who could argue with that statement? Checked out Delux Burger today; Delux is a burger joint that gets some serious buzz and numerous Best Burger awards from the local media. They are also a late night favorite since they serve food until 2 AM. This gives them street credit in my opinion.

The mystery dining companion, otherwise known as L. joined me for this burger excursion this evening; we arrived around 10:00 PM for a late supper. The seating is a bit cramped in the dining room and the patio. The Delux menu is very nicely limited, meeting my personal rule for just do what you do best. We both ordered the signature entree, the “Delux Burger”($9.5), starring a half-pound of freshly ground Harris Ranch beef; supporting cast includes a toasted demi baguette topped with Maytag and Gruyère cheeses, sweet caramelized onions, applewood smoked bacon and organic arugula. We also ordered the Combination Fries “a la cart” ($6) which came out before the Burgers. The fries were fantastic! They were served in a mini shopping cart (making them easy to share) and included french and sweet potato fries. Two sauces were also included with the fries, a standard ketchup and a house aioli which resembled a thousand island type sauce with some kick. My apologies for the pictures, but the lighting was very low and I did not want to be disruptive with a flash.

The burgers came out shortly after the fries. They were impressive looking before we took the first bite – robust in size and the beef was perfectly cooked. Delux recommends to order their burgers at medium rare allowing them to showcase the juiciness of the beef; L. and I ordered our burgers medium and they were prepared perfectly. As we bit into these works of art, the beefy goodness oozed wonderful flavor onto our palate. The beef truly is the star of this show, however supporting cast complements it nicely without taking away from the magnificent flavor of the beef. This burger really hit the spot.

The Delux Burger

I was able to command and conquer this burger, however L. was only able to master one half and took the other half home. Adam from Man Vs. Food would have been so disappointed with her. A few other good factors that Delux offers: Good service, fantastic beer selection, which are primarily microbrews from across the country, and reasonable prices. If Delux has a weakness, it’s an atmosphere that’s a bit trendy and possibly even slightly pretentious, but the burgers are so good that it’s overruled.

Overall, a fantastic experience… and another bite into burger history.

Coming Soon To Phoenix: Five Guys and Smashburger

Right now, In-N-Out Burger may be king of the hill for fast food burgers in Phoenix, but they may have some hefty competition on the horizon. According to Justin Eats, we have a few new contenders coming to town this fall: Five Guys Burgers and Fries and Smashburger.

Five GuysThe coming of Five Guys has been anticipated by many East Coast transplants for quite some time. It’s been said that the Arlington, VA based burger joint has been been compared as the east coast In-N-Out Burger. During my last trip to Pittsburgh, I was able to try a Five Guys Burger.

Like In-N-Out Burger, Five Guys keeps the menu simplistic; they offer regular and little-sized burgers, all made with fresh, never frozen angus beef with fries on the side. However, Five Guys menu is broadened by also offering hot dogs and a Cajun variation of their fries. All regular burgers are constructed with 2 beef patties, while the little burgers contain 1 beef patty. The fries are are cut from fresh potatoes daily, and then fried in 100% peanut oil. What I like about Five Guys is that they offer a large selection of additional toppings at no charge (including traditional “premium” toppings like grilled onions and grilled mushrooms). I ordered a regular bacon cheeseburger with grilled onions, mayo, and ketchup. It was a really good burger, although I think I’m still partial to In-N-Out. I really like the fries better at Five Guys though; they are cut larger, and the peanut oil really gives them a nice flavor. Another Five Guys pro: the portions are much more robust than In-N-Out Burger – the burgers are bigger and you get a larger order of fries… more bang for your buck. Five guys also offers fresh in-shell peanuts to eat while you’re waiting for your food, which is a nice touch that also helps them stand out.

But in the end it comes down to this: just like In-N-Out Burger, Five Guys has proven that if you make a good product at a fair price, you can keep your menu simple and consistent… and people will keep coming back.

According to Justin at Justin Eats, there are two confirmed locations for Five Guys, Mesa’s Dana Park Village Square, and along Mill Avenue in downtown Tempe, both expected to open by late fall of this year.

Smashburger

Another player emerging in the Phoenix fast food burger market is the Denver, CO based Smashburger. I don’t have much information on them at this time but after looking over their menu, they seem to offer a more eclectic selection of burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, salads, and sides.  The burgers come in 1/3 and 1/2 poundages, sides offered include onion rings and veggie frites, and they also have a line of milk shakes, malts, and a root beet float, courtesy of Häagen-Dazs ice creams for dessert. There is also a special menu for kids.
